Kindness-First Ideas That Go Beyond Candy

Chocolates and candy have become the beloved go-to for showing appreciation on Valentine’s Day—but is there something even sweeter (and more tooth-friendly) we could share this year? At its core, Valentine’s Day is about letting the people we care about know they are loved. So why not celebrate through acts of kindness and appreciation?

Try introducing some of these kindness-first Valentine’s Day activities for kids:

Make Appreciation Cards for Family and Teachers

Start your kindness-centered day by creating appreciation cards for family members and teachers. Encourage your kids to draw pictures on the cover and help them write thoughtful notes of gratitude inside. If your children would like to thank their teacherswithsomething extra, a handwritten note paired with a small token of appreciation—such as flowers or a gift card—can go a long way.

Caring Crafts

What would Valentine’s Day be without some heartfelt crafts? Show your love for friends and family with one (or more!) of these creative ideas:

  • “I Love You Because…” Jar
  • Decorate a jar and fill it with notes explaining why you love or appreciate someone.
  • Friendship Flipbook
  • Draw pictures or add photos to create a personalized flipbook celebrating friendship.
  • Friendship Bracelets
  • Perfect for kids who enjoy hands-on activities—create custom bracelets as a fun way to show you care.

Read Books That Teach Love, Empathy, and Friendship

Understanding the importance of kindness, friendship, and community can be easier through storytelling. Reading together is a wonderful way to open meaningful conversations. Consider one of these titles while discussing kindness this Valentine’s Day:

  • Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud
  • Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña
  • Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller

Use Reflection Questions or Journaling Prompts

Thoughtful questions can encourage children to reflect and engage more deeply with the idea of kindness.Notsure where tostart?Try asking:

  • How do your family and/or friends show you kindness?
  • How does it feel when someone is kind to us?
  • What is one act of kindness we can practice today?

Try one—or many—of these ideas to make Valentine’s Day extra meaningful for the whole family. And ifyou’relooking for someone tohelpbring creativity, care, and kindness into yourfamily’sdaily life, reach out tous atinfo@nannyauthority.com.

How Nannies Can Help Young Children Understand Dr. King’s Message

Martin Luther King Jr. Day offers a meaningful opportunity to introduce young children to important life values such as kindness, fairness, and the importance of community. While nannies and caregivers may not teach the full historical context in a formal way, MLK Day opens the door to planting early seeds of empathy and understanding. Through guided play, simple conversations, and thoughtful activities, nannies can honor Dr. King’s legacy while meeting children where they are developmentally.

Ifyou’relooking for gentle, age-appropriate ways to begin this conversation, here are some ideas to help bring these important themes to life.

Start Simple

Younger childrendon’tneed dates, speeches, or complex explanations to begin understanding Dr. King’s work. Start with the basics—who he was and what he cared about. Simple statements such as, “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an important person who worked to help people treat one another kindly and fairly,” are often enough.

Using clear, gentle language helps children connect these ideas to concepts they already understand, such as sharing, fairness, and being kind to others.

Use Picture Books & Storytime

Storytime is one of the most effective ways to introduce Dr. King and his legacy. Picture books allow children to engage visually and emotionally without feeling overwhelmed. Look for books that emphasize themes like kindness, fairness, and helping others rather than heavy historical detail.

As you read together, pause to ask simple questions such as, “How do you think that made them feel?” or “What would you do in that situation?” Keep the conversation light and open, allowing children time to absorb the ideas and ask questions naturally.

Some favorite picture books about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:

Guided Play

Play is how young children process and understand the world around them. Nannies, parents, and caregivers can use guided play to reflect Dr. King’s values in subtle but impactful ways. Practice fairness by taking turns, sharing toys, and problem-solving together. Community-based play—such as building a neighborhood with blocks or dolls—can also encourage conversations about helping others and working together.

Guided play offers natural moments to model empathy, cooperation, and compassion during everyday interactions.

Meaningful Crafts

Simple crafts provide children with a hands-on way to connect with the themes of MLK Day. Keep activities open-ended and focused on kindness, inclusion, and community.

Meaningful craft ideas include:

  • “I Have a Dream” Wall: Best for multiple children or the whole family. Give everyone sticky notes and ask them to write or draw ways they can show kindness or dreams they have for their community. Place the notes ona walland talk about them together.
  • Kindness Collage: Use magazines to find images of people helping one another, then create a collage that highlightsactsof kindness.
  • Helping Hands: Trace and cut out paper handprints, then label each one with kind actions such as “sharing,” “helping,” or “listening.”

Snack-Time Conversations

Snack time offers a relaxed, pressure-free moment to continue these conversations. Rather than a formal lesson, ask gentle questions like, “What’s something kind you did today?” or “How do we feel when someone is fair to us?” Keeping the tone casual and supportive encourages children to share openly and think more deeply about these values.

Through conversation, stories, play, and creative activities, nannies can help children begin to understand the values Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.stoodfor. These MLK Day activities show children that kindness and fairness matter—and that even small hands can make a difference.

Helping Kids Learn About Holiday Traditions Around the World

The holiday season is a magical time of year for many children around the world. Filled with celebration and cherished moments with loved ones, this season offers a wonderful opportunity to introduce kids to a variety of cultural traditions. Learning about global holiday celebrations can help nurture respect and empathy for diversity. It’s also a meaningful way to expand your own family’s festivities.

Why Teaching Holiday Traditions Matters

Exploring holiday traditions beyond our own helps children understand that while clothing, food, music, and customs may differ, the underlying themes of family, gratitude, and togetherness are universal. Exposure to other cultures allows children to discover new ways of expressing joy during the holiday season. These conversations encourage openness and compassion. They reinforce that there is no single “right” way to celebrate—during the holidays or at any other time.

Keeping It Age-Appropriate and Engaging

Introducing children to winter holiday traditions from around the world can be both fun and meaningful, especially when activities are tailored to their age and interests. For younger children, try coloring pages, simple stories, crafts, or songs inspired by different cultures. These age-appropriate activities help children form early connections and appreciation for traditions beyond their own.

Older children may enjoy exploring deeper aspects of holidays, such as learning about their history, symbolism, and cultural significance. This encourages curiosity and thoughtful discussion.

Practical Ways to Explore Holiday Traditions Around the World

A great way to begin exploring global holiday traditions is by focusing on one aspect at a time—such as food. Cooking together is one of the most engaging (and delicious!) ways to learn. Here are a few favorites to try as a family:

ʴDZǰóԲ – Originating in Spain and enjoyed throughout Mexico and the Philippines, these crumbly shortbread cookies are a festive and flavorful holiday treat.

Latkes – A staple during Hanukkah, latkes symbolize the miracle of oil in the Second Temple. They represent hope and perseverance across generations of Jewish families.

Kulkuls – These traditional deep-fried sweets are commonly shared during the holidays in India and are especially popular among children.

Tamales – A beloved tradition throughout Latin America, making tamales is often a communal, multi-day process. It centers on family, togetherness, and shared effort.

Fried Catfish Fingers – While Kwanzaa celebrations include a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and dishes, fried catfish is a favorite featured food. It represents shared heritage and culture.

Celebrating Diversity While Honoring Your Own Traditions

Learning about holiday traditions from around the world doesn’t mean replacing your family’s customs. Instead, embracing new ideas and cultures helps foster empathy and appreciation for our differences. Early exposure to cultural awareness encourages togetherness and enhances the joy of the holiday season for everyone.

There are countless ways to explore holiday traditions from around the world. If you’re looking for someone to help bring meaningful holiday experiences into your home, contact the Nanny Authority at info@nannyauthority.com or (973) 466-2669.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! While we get cozy in our fuzzy socks and our marshmallows melt in our ceramic mugs of hot coco, it’s the perfect time to reflect on your year and find ways you and your family can pay it forward and put some goodness into the world. Every small action can make a huge difference in someone’s life, so let’s start the season strong by spreading joy and giving back to the community. If you’re looking for a fun and rewarding way to do this, consider doing one of the following activities with your kids.

Toys for Tots

A great way to pay it forward is with Toys for Tots. Go to your local participating store (which can be found using the link below) and let your child select a toy to donate to a kid in need. Share that it can be any kind of toy that they think someone might enjoy – maybe it’s their favorite Barbie or a Lego set. By personalizing the experience, we can help teach our children ways to make someone else’s holiday brighter.

If you own or work for a business that has a lot of foot traffic, consider hosting a donation bin for Toys for Tots! You and your kids can witness how community comes together to help one another.

Find your local chapter here:

The Salvation Army – Angel Tree Program

Another exciting way to give back is with the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program. Find a participating Walmart near you (which can be found through the links below), and there, you can find an Angel: one of over one million children who would otherwise not get any gifts this holiday season. After selecting the Angel you and your kids want to sponsor, go through the Angel’s wish list and make them a very special gift box.

If you prefer an online option, Walmart has also made it possible to do this virtually! Put on your coziest pjs and you and the children can make a gift box from the comfort of your couch.

Donate to Food Banks

A third option is to go to your grocery store and get a few non-perishable foods to donate to your local food bank. This is also a great way entertain your little ones while you shop!

While making your selections, consider buying healthy pantry staples. Here are just a few examples of what you can donate:

  • Honey
  • Brown rice
  • Nut butters
  • Apple sauce
  • Canned beans
  • Broths and stock
  • Low-sodium soups
  • Unsweetened dried/canned fruits
  • Low-sodium/unsalted canned vegetables

Most food banks also accept monetary donations as well as food. Every little bit help!

Volunteer in your local area

If you’re looking for ways to help spread some love to your community with your time, try volunteering! Here are some examples of ways you and your kids can get involved:

Postal Service – Operation Santa

Respond to letters to Santa from children around the world! Psst- This one is GREAT for teenagers!

Soup Kitchens

Help with cooking, packing, and/or giving out food at your local soup kitchen or food bank.

Holiday cards for your local hospital

Show off your artistic skills!

Animal Shelters

Many shelters need someone to take their animals on walks while they clean the cages. Psst- This one is GREAT for animal lovers and children on the shyer side.

Sing carols at your local nursing home

Connect with those who may be feeling lonely during this time of year.

Book Fairies

Host a book drive! Tell your family and friends to drop off copies of their favorite stories and donate them to your local library or school.

Nature clean up

Grab some gloves and trash bags and take a walk through nature while helping the environment out. Psst- This one is GREAT for kids with a lot of energy and those who love hands-on activities.

Final Tips for Giving Back

Be sure to look up other community building activities within your area. There is always more good that can be put into the world!

This season is the perfect time to teach your kiddos how to give back to better your local community, and doing activities, like the ones listed above, are great ways to get involved and spread some cheer.
