When it comes to learning outside the classroom, finding the right balance between education and entertainment can be tricky. Kids are smart and can spot a disguised worksheet from a mile away, so how do we make education fun? One of our favorite ways is through educational games. This way, schoolwork can feel more like playtime, just ask any experienced governess! A modern-day governess does more than supervise and tutor. They create engaging, age-appropriate learning opportunities that blend seamlessly into everyday life.

Here are some governess-approved favorite educational games:

Math Bingo

Put a twist on classic bingo by creating a bingo card tailored to your child’s math level! Whether its addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, sharpening math skills can be fun with this engaging game.

Story Cubes

Boost creativity and vocabulary with story cubes! Grab a pair of dice and add photos of your children’s favorite things, like dogs or horses. Roll the dice, and whoever rolls must create a story that includes the images they landed on.

Geography Scavenger Hunt

Turn maps and globes into exciting discovery tools! Hide clues around the house or backyard with questions like, “Find the country where Big Ben is” or “How many continents are there?”

DIY Science Lab

Transform your kitchen into a mini science lab! With simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and food coloring, kids can explore chemistry and cause-and-effect experiments hands-on.

Word Ladder Races

Start with one word, like “bat,” then change one letter at a time to form new words. For example: bat, cat, cut, cup. This fun game sharpens spelling, vocabulary, and phonetic skills.

Language Apps

Language apps like Duolingo or Khan Academy Kids are excellent for improving language skills. They’re especially great for car rides or other similar outings.

When school is out for summer, the house can quickly become a whirlwind of toys and crafts. But with the right strategies, summer doesn’t have to mean chaos. During these long breaks from school, it can be the perfect time to introduce children to the importance and fun of keeping tidy—that’s right, cleaning up can be fun! With the help of a skilled nanny, organization and cleaning can change from being a chore into a game and an afternoon of fun. These activities can not only help build positive habits and responsibility in your children but also help keep the house in order. Here are some of our favorite organization games for kids:

1. Timed Toy Clean-Ups: Turning Speed into a Superpower

Set a timer, start your favorite superhero movie soundtrack, and shout, “Go!” This is especially great for high-energy kiddos who find it exciting to race against the clock. This can also help teach time management and quick decision-making.

2. Freeze! Everybody Grab Your Toys!

Shouting “Freeze!” randomly during chores can add an exciting element that keeps everyone on their toes! Everyone has to try to get as much done before the next freeze; otherwise, you might get frozen in an inconvenient moment!

3. Sorting Challenges: Tidy Up and Tune In

Does this go in a drawer or on the shelf? In the closet, maybe? Sorting challenges ask kids to think critically about where different items belong. This can even be more fun with “mystery boxes”—nannies fill a box with a mix of objects, and the little ones have to sort as quickly as possible. This can help promote spatial awareness and categorization.

4. Color-Coded Closet Organizing: A Rainbow of Responsibility

Who doesn’t love rainbows? By organizing clothing by color, kids can flex their creativity and even add a nice visual to their spaces.

5. Reward-Based Chore Charts: Gamifying Responsibility

Reward-based chore charts can be a great motivational tool for kids of all ages. Pro Tip: Make a summer-themed chart with sunny and ice cream stickers. Once they collect enough stickers, try a reward like earning a small treat or having a movie night! This can help promote goal-setting and consistent effort.

Why Organization Games Matter and How the Right Nanny Can Help

While these types of organization games are not only fun and help keep your household running smoothly, they are also important for further developing crucial life skills in your children. Organization fosters independence and gives your kids a sense of self in their environment. Ready to make the summer both organized and playful? Let us help you find the perfect nanny to help keep your little ones engaged, learning, and thriving! Please email us at info@nannyauthority.com or call us at (973) 466-2669 to get started.

Gifts of any size, big or small, are a great way to show appreciation for the amazing people in your life. Take advantage of Mother’s Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, or even just a random day to thank those who make a difference in your life this spring season! At ĐÓ°É´«Ă˝, one of our favorite ways to show we care is through D.I.Y. pressed flower cards!

Check out the tips below for the best way to get started making these:

For this craft, you will need a blank notecard, PPA (Perfect Paper Adhesive) glue, a small paintbrush, and some pressed flowers. Pressed flowers are sold at craft stores and online, but if you’d like to add extra love and creativity to your card, go pick flowers and press them at home! If you don’t know your loved one’s favorite type of flower, try going for their favorite color. TNA Tip: If your loved one likes to read, make a pressed flower bookmark instead of a card!

DIY Pressed Flower Art

If you press your flowers, stick to a smaller size. Larger plants with thick stems or bulbs are not ideal for flattening. Grab a large book and open it halfway. Use tissue paper to protect the book’s pages, and lay the flower as flat as possible. Remember, however you arrange your flower while it’s being flattened is how it will stay. We recommend laying everything out on the notecard before doing this step. Once everything is in place, carefully close the book, then stack a few heavy books or objects on top of it. Be sure to leave it in a well-ventilated area for faster drying. The flower is done drying once it becomes brittle and unable to bend or fold. This process can take up to one to two weeks, so plan accordingly if you’re going this route for your card.

Once your flowers are ready, take a small paintbrush and apply a thin layer of PPA glue to the back of them. Adults—be sure to help younger children with this step— the flowers are fragile, and glue can cause a sticky situation really fast! After your flowers are secured and the card is completely dry, apply a thin layer of glue over the top. Remember: slow and steady wins the race! Add any additional card decor you like, and presto! Your diy-pressed flower art is ready for gifting!

Crafts Increase Motivation and Creativity

Pressed flower crafts for kids are a great way to get them outside and their creative brains churning! Making a handmade card is a beloved and kind way of showing someone you appreciate them.

If you are looking for someone to help bring a little extra creativity to your child’s life, reach out to the Nanny Authority today. Check out our website at or email us at info@nannyauthority.com.

Quick water safety tips to get you in the pool and off the towel.

Who does not love soaking in the sun between June and August? Summer is a wonderful time of the year when families can rest and recharge in between the school season and often splish and splash in the water to beat the summer heat. While water offers ample opportunities to cool off, build confidence and have fun, it is important to remember that water poses a great threat, particularly to young children. Statistically speaking, more children ages 1-4 die from drowning than any other cause of death. Here are some water safety tips to keep your children safe while enjoying summertime.

SWIM LESSONSĚý

  1. First and foremost, providing children with the resources necessary to float, tread water, swim, and enter and exit the water are life-saving skills. Swim lessons instill confidence in both children and parents to ensure everyone can enjoy the water safely. Learning to swim can significantly reduce the risk of drowning, especially in toddlers through adolescent children.

INFANT SWIMMING RESOURCEĚý

  1. While conventionally, swim lessons are often reserved for older toddlers and children, some families have begun investing in water safety programs such as Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) to provide even the youngest beachgoers with the possible skills needed to survive finding themselves alone in the water. Unlike traditional swim lessons, ISR focuses on skills such as flipping over and learning to float for children 6 months and up in the case of an emergency. For families who may have pools in their yards or homes that are easily accessible to the ocean’s edge, it can be far too easy for little ones to find themselves in a dangerous situation. While there is research that supports the efficacy of self-rescue programs, not all parents are proponents of the ISR method, citing concerns over possible trauma they fear with ISR programs. You can read more about ISR .

µţ´ˇ¸é¸é±ő·ˇ¸éł§Ěý

  1. The difference a secure barrier or fence can make with water safety cannot be understated. Too often, preventable accidents happen where children stray from a supervising eye and reach for a toy that fell into a pool or excitedly go into the bathtub while a caregiver or parent is grabbing something from a separate room. Pools should have secure, self-latching gates to prevent children from entering a pool area unsupervised. The pool fences should clearly separate play areas in your yard from any swimming areas. The same rules apply to those with access to nearby beaches, though this is often less of a concern. In regards to water safety in your home, we advise against leaving children unattended in the bathroom with a full bathtub, and if you need to step away from a child during bathing, physically remove little ones from the area while your attention is elsewhere.

°ä°żł˘°ż¸éł§Ěý

  1. Less thought of, but equally important is what you choose to dress your baby and toddlers in when going to enjoy the ocean air or sit poolside. Color selection can play a crucial role in helping to keep your kids safe and the brighter the better! In an emergency, popular colors such as light blue, white or green can be hard if not nearly impossible to see when fully submerged.

FLOTATION DEVICESĚý

  1. Make sure you have age-appropriate life jackets when you are around natural bodies of water whether that be a lake, ocean, or even a pool – even if your child knows how to swim. Life jackets and flotation devices are excellent precautions to take when on a family boating trip or enjoying jet skis!

Ěý

BRING A BUDDY

  1. Children should never be left to swim alone. While this may be an obvious tip, reminding children to wait for an adult and ensure there is supervision in the form of a caregiver or lifeguard is important!

The above are just a few ways to keep your children safe when going for a swim this summer. Heading to your next outing prepared can look different depending on what kind of body of water you may be heading to. Keep kids prepared and talk about what to do if they find themselves alone in a pool area and how to stay safe at the beach by spotting riptides and how to handle the situation if they are caught in one. The summer is a time to unwind, stay cool, and have fun, and with a little bit of mindfulness and a great team that prioritizes safety around your family, you can have the best summer ever!

What to do during the summer months varies from family to family and can be a very personal choice. You want to give your children the opportunity to recharge during their school break but more than likely, you still want them engaged in an activity or two and enjoying time with friends! Participating in a summer camp is a great way to hone in on your children’s interests, encourage independence, make time for play and teamwork, and encourage screen-free activities. There are a plethora of camp options for kids and sitting down to go over your summer camp plans should be an inclusive effort for parents, caregivers, and their children. In general, you should expect any camping experience to help your child build a sense of community, confidence, self-esteem, teamwork, opportunities to explore different interests and engage in plenty of outside time.

Here are some ideas to get you into the camping spirit!

Sleepaway Camp

Your family may have a long-standing tradition of attending the same sleepaway camp, summer after summer. Sleepaway camp is an incredible opportunity for children to develop who they are as individuals, apart from their parents for the first time. Children are gently pushed beyond their comfort zones where they can build life skills and learn to be a part of a community. Sleepaway camp could be a great fit for your family and some camps offer short-term options (1-2 days up to a week) so children can “test the waters” before committing to a full summer away from home. Parent Map shares the benefits of sleepaway camp . There is a strong sense of community when sleeping away at camp between campers, counselors, and staff who share the summer, especially year after year.

Day Camp

A day camp is a fantastic option for the child who may not be interested in a summer sleeping away from home but is interested in a camping experience. Day camp provides the opportunity for children to spend the day away from home engaging in sports, crafts, team building, personal development, boating activities, and so much more! Children are still able to build confidence and independence in a camping environment while getting to go home at the end of the day.

Sports, Music Camps, and more!

There are so many camps geared towards children’s specific interests; Sports, Music, Theater, and Art are just a few we can think of off the top of our heads. Regardless of what kind of camp your child is interested in, you can feel confident that each environment will offer your child, positive role models, reinforce skills they are working on during the school year, create opportunities to socialize and build friendships with other kids who share their interests, and create opportunities for personal growth and skill building. Let’s break down what the four above camps may offer your child this summer!

Sports camps tend to have a heavier focus on specific sporting interests or an athletic day-to-day experience. Some sports camps are full-day programs and the primary purpose of any sports summer program is to immerse children in specific skill development for their preferred sporting activity. These camps help improve athletic techniques and develop children’s passion during the off-season for some sports (like football or baseball camp!).

For Music and Fine Art programs, parents should expect children to have an immersive learning experience that fosters a love for their child’s chosen activity typically with opportunities to showcase developing skills in a concert format during the middle or end of summer.

None of this sounds great to me, anything else?

OF COURSE! There is something for everyone. If your child is particularly interested in technology or robotics, there is likely a summer program in your area that can tap into their love for STE(A)M. Children who enjoy time in nature and do well around animals may have the opportunity to attend camp programs at a local farm or zoo. In this day and age, if you can think about it, the odds are that it may already exist.

April showers, bring May flowers – and right now is the perfect time to plant seeds with your little ones! There are so many fun and exciting ways to start an indoor garden with your children. Planting seedlings inside is a great way to protect young plants from the elements and actively engage young gardeners in the process. Watching plants grow can be a magical and exciting experience for kids (and adults!) and can provide year-round opportunities for children to observe and participate in a plant’s life cycle.

Starting your indoor garden

There are many ways to start your indoor garden but first and foremost you need to know what kind of plants you hope to grow and where you want them to grow. You should work with your little one to find a sun-drenched area in your home, ideally with a large windowsill, or purchase growing lights to hang over your plants. Most vegetables, fruits, and flowers will need to be transplanted outside later in the season but starting your garden indoors is a wonderful way to begin! Some essentials you will need for your garden are:

  • Seeds of your choice (some great recommendations for what seeds begin best indoors can be found )
  • Potting mix
  • Spray bottle
  • Water
  • Growing containers (Some fun and sustainable ideas and !

Things to consider when gardening with kids

  • Kids can be involved in all aspects of the gardening process, from finding a sunny space for seedlings to picking out seeds and starting the seeds in growing containers. Involving your children in the planting and watering process is a great way for them to learn about a plant’s life cycle and can also bring new meaning to “farm (or garden) to the table.” Seeing where food comes from and being a part of that process can be fun and engaging for little ones.
  • Weekends and school vacations! Tiny seedlings can dry out quickly and while there are self-watering planting systems you can use, a big part of the fun is having children check and care for seedlings daily. Make sure to carve time in your weekends to care for your plant babes and if your family travels during a school break, have a friend continue the plant care in your absence.
  • Little botanists can learn patience, sustainability, and independence when they garden. When you start a garden inside, it is much easier to keep children invested in gardening and safer for your young seedlings as they take root and begin to sprout.

Never worry about perfection when gardening with your little ones. The experience should be educational, engaging, and most importantly fun! Learn more gardening tips, tricks, and benefits . How can my children contribute at all ages and stages?

Involving children in the day-to-day running of our homes is a great way to provide them with autonomy, foster opportunities for independence, and practice life skills! Some parents may worry that specific tasks may be too complex for young children, but research suggests the earlier we involve our children in household chores, the more capable they will be as they develop. We often as a society, do not give our tiniest humans as much credit as they deserve when it comes to handling complex tasks or pitching in at home. By including our children in day-to-day chores we are actively telling them, “I trust you to do this and I know you are capable.” But what are the best ways to include our little (and big ones) in household chores?

Chores For Toddlers

For our youngest toddlers, taking time to include them in simple tasks like washing vegetables to cook can be a fun and practical sensory experience. With toddlers it is incredibly important we model the desired behaviors we hope they will practice on their own. Getting your children to participate in cleaning up toys, pouring ingredients while we cook, or filling Fido’s food bowl are all age-appropriate and fun ways to introduce chores to younger children.

Activities that include scooping, pouring, and transferring are great ways to assist in developing fine motor skills while giving your willfully independent child the freedom they are craving.

Preschool-Aged Chores

As children get a bit older, preschoolers continue to crave autonomy both in and out of the home. We can assist with providing chores that are safely done with or without supervision by an adult depending on the activity. This is a great time to encourage children to clear their own place at the dinner table or to assist in watering household plants. If there are a few spills here or there – don’t panic! We want to instill a sense of achievement and confidence in our little leaders, rather than shut them down for completing a task in a less-than-perfect (and age-appropriate) manner.

Fall is a great time of year to bring children into the outdoor upkeep of a busy home through fun activities like leaf raking, weed and pinecone collecting, and flower planting. Introducing chores does not have to be a daunting task, it can be a way to start a new tradition with your family. There is nothing like a crisp autumn breeze and some jumping in the leaves to get everyone motivated!

Tips for Implementing A Chore Routine

As children get older, naturally we can give more opportunities for responsibility and independence in our homes. Talk with your partner about what you want chores to look like in your home. Always keep in mind that modeling is the best way to reinforce the behaviors you hope to see in your home. Elementary-aged children have a strong sense of self in comparison to preschool and toddler-aged children and it is natural to find children wanting to push back when it comes to rules, boundaries, and chores. Remaining calm, consistent and patient goes a long way with this age group. For kids who may challenge us, try to stick to chores that directly impact them as individuals rather than the family as a whole. This could look like packing their own lunch for school or making sure their room is organized. For children who are open to contributing to the, “we,” asking them to assist with groceries, loading or unloading the dishwasher, or assisting with the family pets are great tasks to build responsibility.

One of the most powerful gifts you can give the children in your care is the gift of reading aloud. Children who are read to each day develop important pre-literacy skills like knowing how to hold a book, knowing how to flip pages, and learning the direction that we read the words (from left to right or from right to left, depending on the book’s language). Reading aloud also instills in children an early love of reading, which sets them on a pathway to independence and academic success. Choosing great books to engage children in the reading process is a critical aspect of literacy education!

We’re going to be starting a series of our favorite books for children, but first, we wanted to talk about our criteria for choosing an excellent book for children. This information comes from our Administrative Assistant, Lindsay Gossett, who was an early childhood educator for six years before joining the Nanny Authority and holds a degree in Child & Family Studies (with a concentration in child development & coursework in literacy) from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

“There are a few criteria that I have always used when choosing books for my early childhood classrooms. These are inspired by Montessori and Reggio Emilia pedagogy, along with my personal experience with what babies, toddlers, and early elementary children are engaged by and love to read!

First, my preference for very young children is reality-based books. Fantasy and fairy-tales are excellent additions to your child’s bookshelf, but they also need ample opportunity to learn and understand the real world around them. Have you ever told a joke to your toddler and they simply haven’t understood why it’s funny? Jokes, fantasy worlds, and fairy tales often have power because they contradict some aspects of our everyday life. When an older child sees an image of Jack climbing the beanstalk up to the giant’s house, she thinks, “Wow, beanstalks are usually very small! This must be an unusual beanstalk! And people don’t live up in the sky – what a remarkable giant this must be!” When a toddler sees the same image, they don’t recognize that it is a fantastical story or that there is anything humorous or interesting about the circumstance Jack finds himself in. They take what they are presented with as fact, so we must introduce them to many real-life stories!

Second, it is my priority to introduce children to beautiful language and beautiful art. When reading aloud, the words in a book should have a rhythm and a diverse vocabulary. While “Biscuit” or “See Spot Run” are excellent books for beginning readers due to their simple vocabulary and short words, the exact opposite should be our priority when reading to very young children! Their brains are in a sensitive period for language development, and they are yearning for fun new words with interesting meanings, for rhythmic song-like language, and for stories with gorgeous pictures that they can study for a long time without getting bored.

Finally, let’s talk about the physical types of books we are choosing for our homes and classrooms. While it is tempting to choose only board books, or tear-proof books, or waterproof books due to the (reasonable) fear of books getting destroyed, those will ultimately teach children that there is no reason to be careful with books, which will lead to many more destroyed library books and whichever “special books” you may decide to buy in paper over the years. The more we introduce our children to delicate materials like paper, the more careful they will learn to be with them! Of course, for a baby who is exploring books independently, board books are very appropriate – they can gnaw on them, flip the thick pages with their own hands, and grasp it. Once your child has fine motor control, though, begin introducing paper books and teaching the rules that go along with them. “Books are for reading! If you’d like to tear paper, you can use a paper towel.” Or, “We are gentle with books! When you are rough with books, it takes a lot of time to fix them. We are always very gentle with books.”

For nannies visiting the library or bookstore, aunties picking out birthday presents, or parents curating your child’s bookshelf, I hope this advice will be helpful!”

Thank you, Lindsay! We are so excited to help you with choosing great books for children in our upcoming blog posts!
